South Baltimore Adult High School: Breaking Down Barriers to Continued Education

I want to say thank you for this program. Before SBAHS, I was at the point where I really felt like giving up.
—Megan Muojeke, SBAHS Graduate

Megan Muojeke knew she needed a high school degree to follow her dream of going to college, but she kept hitting barriers when she attempted to continue her education as an adult. She had been studying for the GED when she had her daughter but found the time commitments of studying and the cost of testing impossible to balance with her life as a new mother. “Before SBAHS, I was at the point where I really felt like giving up,” Megan said

Breaking Down Barriers

For hundreds of thousands of Marylanders, not having a high school diploma is an invisible barrier that prevents them from earning a living wage and building meaningful careers.  At Elev8 Baltimore, we aim to break down barriers preventing people from returning to school by making our program free and accessible. Many of our students are working parents like Megan, so we offer our classes online or in person.  For Megan, the low cost and flexibility were key to allowing her to go back to school. “The program was a perfect fit for me. I was able to transfer my transcripts from high school so I could pick up where I left off. Taking online classes was perfect because I could stay home with my kids and didn’t have to take the time to commute.”

Supporting Student Success

Going back to school as an adult is not an easy thing to do. Our teachers care about our students and are there to offer resources and support to help them succeed. We also have tutors available to assist with students’ success. This combination of accessibility and support makes SBAHS stand out from other continued education programs. The extra support made a difference to Megan, who said, “The teacher was really good. She was there to help you if you needed it. I never felt like I was on my own.”

After graduating with her diploma from SBAHS, Megan was able to follow her dream of going to college. Now, she is studying at Montgomery College, working towards her Associate’s Degree in General Studies, with the hope of continuing her education to become a social worker. We love to celebrate our graduates like Megan, who are living examples of the life-changing potential of returning to school.
