One chance for city schools

A few weeks ago, Elev8 Baltimore parents gathered downtown to tell our city’s leaders just how deplorable conditions are in our public school buildings.
We, along with parents from many other schools in the city, asked leaders to consider an innovative plan out of Greenville, SC, which was able to raise $1 billion by securing legislation to dedicate existing streams of school construction money to paying off bonds over 25 years. As a result of the plan, Greenville constructed or renovated 70 schools in just five years.
The “Speak-Out” drew the attention of many local politicians, including Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who responded shortly after with a plan of her own to raise revenue to support school improvements and construction.
The plan falls short of the $1 billion raised in Greenville. But at least she’s thinking about improving our schools.
Here’s what The Baltimore Sun had to say about Mayor Rawlings-Blake’s idea. Read this editorial and tell us what you think.
